In 2020 the Spring Book Fair was put on hold due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.
In August of 2020, the Library Director and Library Board (without input or involvement of the Friends) updated the policy regarding donated materials, defining all donated materials as property of the Library:
All books, DVDs, music and other items housed in the Library and not processed for circulation
and/or other use by the Library’s patrons are considered to be donations to the Library, and
subject to the Library’s policies and procedures for use and storage.
With this new policy in place, the Library has unilaterally taken over the Library Book Fair duties, including the design, management, and direction of the newly constructed Friends Basement Book Shop and Sorting area.
We are currently in the process of working through this change and exploring other fundraising opportunities.
Before 2020, the Friends created, organized, and executed two book fairs, one in the spring and another in the fall, and a record sale in the spring. At these events, the Friends raised between $7,000 – $10,000 at each book fair and around $2500 at each record sale. This money was then used to support various programming through microgrants and material purchases.
The Friends sold donations of books, music, art, and other items given to us throughout the year. If you would like to donate your gently used items, you can learn more on our Donations page.
